In this thread someone else was asking about a similar upgrade and I opined that he wouldn't see much benefit. Guess I was right. It's a pricier undertaking, but if you want to see some real improvement, switch to an Intel. I was an AMD fanboy for years, but the plain, somewhat sad, truth these days is that Intel is cleaning AMD's clock on raw performance.

> do i need to turn on its extra power?

I'm not even sure what this means... Overclocking? You'll probably see a little benefit from overclocking. Unless you happen to have a game that is right on the verge of running at 100%, though, it's not likely to make anything playable that wasn't already playable.

That's a great basic setup for MAME, and pretty cheap too.

It shouldn't be a problem if your cables are long enough. Use on-board video for desktop work and another video card permanently connected to the monitor in the cab.

I wonder if a long USB cable to the I-PAC will cause latency?

The only problem is that you will not be able to do anything at the desktop while MAME is in focus on the arcade monitor.

It sucks, I was *this* close to pulling the trigger on basically that upgrade a few months ago. Then my priorities got completely upended and even $400 was too much of a splurge. Ah well, someday.

Until 2012-09-10 there's promo code discounts for the motherboard and CPU...

Motherboard Discount Promo Code - EMCNANF36 - $15.00 off
CPU Discount Promo Code - EMCNANF35 - $20.00 off

That makes the three items above only $358.97 not including shipping and taxes if applicable.

The memory just dropped in price $1, and there's another discount code good for the next 48 hours (expires 2012-09-08 or while supplies last)...

Memory Discount Promo Code - EMCNANC48 - 15% off ($6.60 in this case)

Which brings the new total down to $352.37

I still haven't purchased it either.

I just can't justify spending the money right now since I don't really need a computer upgrade. I also can't seem to find anyone selling the LGA 1155 mounting kit for my Thermalright HR-01 heatsink that I'd need to do the motherboard swap. I even tried emailing the Thermalright support people and asked if I could purchase it directly from them and go zero response. Bastards. See if I ever buy another heatsink from them.
