Is there a list of all the 'adult' games?
#331071 - 09/02/14 06:23 PM

I just got my Raspberry Pi Mame cabinet up and running for a test before I gut it for painting.

Everything works great, but as I was playing Puzznic, I discovered to my horror that, as a reward for completing levels, the game gradually uncovers a picture of a naked woman.

The reason for my horror was that my kids will be playing on this machine.

I did a Google search, and discovered that there are a number of these 'titty' games in the Mame rom sets.

I have been trying to find a list of these games so I can go through and remove them, but I'm not having much luck.
I found plenty of references and advice on removing them, but all the links I found are broken.

I know that there are filtering algorithms, but I'd prefer to go through and remove them manually rather than mess around with Mame, especially as I am using a non-Windows version of Mame.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a list?

I'm using the 0.37b5 rom set.

You'll want MAME Content Manager Plus:
http://mcm.mameworld.info/

However I don't know how much luck will you have running it against a such old set.

This is an old question. I recommend searching under 'remove adult games, mame', particularly at BYOAC.

If you're using a frontend, ask the author to implement a feature to filter out mature games, based on catver.ini or MASH's category.ini.

Go to http://www.progettoemma.net/
Than go to ADVANCED SEARCH
After that You should select *mature* under CATEGORY all the way from Misc *Mature* to Tabletop/ Othello *Mature*.
You should do that manually because site's front end does not allow selecting only the word MATURE alone ??!
But You are willing to do this operation manually as U said, so that is the solution for You. (and others, too)

P.S. Can someone ask on that site for implementing this particular search option ?

GameEX has options in the config wizard to generate the game listing based on options you can set and everyone will have a better experience if you designate actual decent hardware and the latest version of the emulator for your MAME gaming experience

On the Japanese version, we can play for Eurasian naked pictures. This feature was removed for Export versions.

There's your problem. If you have an RPi, you are NOT running MAME. You are running some simalcrum that started with 1999-era MAME and they've since rewritten enough of it to count as a completely new work (and technically be in violation of the license for trying to claim it's MAME).

MAMEdev is kind of terrified of the number of people who run that catastrophe and assume that real MAME is just as bad.

He's confessed to using a frontend that as far as I know is no longer maintained.

The Raspberry Pi was cheap, easy to set up, fits in my small cab, requires no cooling, and plays all of the games I'm interested in with aplomb.

Surely the definition of 'decent hardware' is hardware that meets your use-case requirements?
Why would I want to replace it with a honking great pc that sucks in power and blows out hot air, just to play the exact same games?

The Raspberry Pi is an elegant solution to my particular requirements.

Sorry to moralise here, but if you're horrified at the thought of your kids seeing a human body you have far bigger issues to deal with. A "titty" is a body part with a biological function, and anything beyond that is just social hangups and memes propagated through society. Yes, I have kids, and they are allowed to play with MAME with a pretty much complete ROM set. Puzznic is pretty harmless anyway - fairly tasteful digitised stills - and my kids would probably be disgusted if they fired up one of the more tacky Comad games anyway.

There are some games that I'd definitely want to be there to explain to them. Mahjong Jogakuen and Mahjong Erotica Golf feature female masturbation, but masturbation's a topic that's going to have to be addressed with kids eventually anyway. Then there's coercion in games like Mahjong Hyper Reaction, which you need to explain isn't good behaviour, whether it's in a sexual context or not.

And that's the thing: you need to be there with your kids, know what they're playing, and fill them in as you go. I hope you let them know that becoming a street fighter isn't something to aspire to either.

If you're really set on ensuring only "safe" games are available, you're better off going with an additive approach. Only add ROMs from games you know you're comfortable having your kids playing. Any list is going to be based on someone else's values anyway, so you'd need to go through it with a fine toothed comb to ensure you agree with each inclusion/exclusion.

Where have you been for the last 5 years? You can get PCs intended for home-theater use that are about 4 inches square and fanless but can run full-size big-boy Windows or Linux and actual MAME instead of the shitty compromised garbage on the Pi.

Whoever said Americans were all perfectly fine with violence? You need only look back to lawsuits on violent games like Chiller and Mortal Kombat to know otherwise.

How about just not stereotyping? The USA is a very large country with views all over the place. Violence/no violence/nudity/no nudity/sex/no sex/Mac is best/Windows is best/etc. As just about anywhere I should add.

Don't use a 12V-heavy Prescott system with a shitty Chinese power supply designed for a Pentium 3, problem solved. PCs have changed this side of 2004. As for power consumption, I'm sure changing out those incandescent bulbs for CFLs or LEDs have already paid for your energy bill.

Not elegant or cheap. Just a glorified, oversized cellphone with the power of a Williamette-era Pentium 4 (if that).

That would still make it faster than the computer I used when I first tried MAME, that was a Pentium 75, in 1997, the version was .1 but I liked a different Emulator back then more than MAME, it would run Pacman at full speed which MAME wouldn't do on a P75 but it do come close. The RPi was cheap for was I used it for, though it NOT for playing MAME, but works for what I want it to do.

That MAME is so old that you missed out on the newer games that been adding onto the newer releases.

Wikipedia benchmarks the Pi as equivalent to a Pentium II-300. A Willamette would wipe the floor with it, and any cellphone made in the last 4 years would wipe the floor with the Willamette.

You go on a rant about morals then want to impose your own on him?

He is not cool with his kids seeing that. I can see that. As kids talk to each other as they are humans. You do not want your kid to be 'the one who has the porn games on their tv'.

Like it or not you would end up getting your kid ostracized by the neighbor families. It is something people have to deal with. People are sensitive about it. Especially with their kids. You are looking at it from your pov look at it from the parent across the streets pov. They now have to take care of something they personally may not be prepared for. While that may not be your problem it is rather rude. They will treat you accordingly. You could get lucky and have 'cool' neighbors. I know mine would probably not be cool with it.

That site isn't bad, but it has all the *mature* games broken down into like 10 different categories. There is no *all mature* category.

That is why morality is a crude tool for reckoning the world. Vas Crabb's sentiment is relevant. It represents a sensibility. And therein lies the key.

> He is not cool with his kids seeing that. I can see that. As kids talk to each other as they are humans. You do not want your kid to be 'the one who has the porn games on their tv'. Like it or not you would end up getting your kid ostracized by the neighbor families.

I wouldn't have them kids in ma howse. But that's one reason I won't have kids*: I can't yet dictate the quality of their (social) environment. While I learned a lot of street smarts, I certainly was squelched by a lack of cosmic curiosity in my neighborhood.

*Not the main reason, of course, which is that I'm not called to have any.

You mean it's cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, and cheap. There are two kinds of Pi emulator users: those who have realized they wasted their time and money and gone back to PC/Mac/Linux, and those who will in the future.

(Yeah, it's a necrothread, who cares).

It's funny to me that people who go through all the trouble of putting a really nice full sized cab in their home are content with crap like a R Pi.

It's like wearing a suit to a mud wrestling match or showing up at the Indianapolis 500 expecting to win with a Geo Metro.

I'll add a third type to the list: those who tried it just to see how bad it could be knowing full well it wouldn't be good going in, and subsequently found out just how crap it is. I'm in that category.

My use case: a generic cabinet being dedicated to laserdisc emulation. DAPHNE doesn't require a ton of horsepower to run, so is a good candidate for RasPi emulation.

How it turned out: poorly.

DAPHNE on the RasPi is an unmaintained, broken mess, as is its fork, Hypseus. A few things ran, but many didn't, including games that have been supported for 15-plus years on DAPHNE's original target platforms. Interfacing controls to the RasPi in any sort of useful way meant adding a rather expensive JAMMA adapter to the mix. Storage was at least adequate for this scenario using a 64GB SD card, which is about the best thing I can say for the experiment.

(Note: the RasPi ports of DAPHNE are maintained by people other than Matt Ownby. Don't bug Matt about the problems on that platform; they're neither his fault nor responsibility as ARM is not an architecture that DAPHNE was ever intended to run on in the first place.)

Moving on, I decided to see what the state of MAME was. Frankly, not much better. Trying both RetroPie and PiMame confirmed my suspicions that 68000-based games are a stretch for the system - and even some 8-bit ones (depending on hardware complexity) were problematic. It also doesn't help that these projects are basing their MAME derivatives around what can only be charitably described as less-than-recent versions of MAME, in some cases going as far back as 0.37b5 for their codebase.

The conclusion that I came to was that the real purpose of attempting arcade emulation on the RasPi was to make crappy x-in-1 boards look good by comparison and nothing else. If the DAPHNE variants had actually functioned in line with the other major ports of that emulator I could make a credible defence for using a RasPi in that specific instance, but only really in that specific instance. Until their maintainers get them into a usefully-working state, however, that's not going to be the case.

As for non-arcade (meaning console or home computer) emulation... I didn't bother. There was no reason to; tying up an entire computer (even a low-powered one like the RasPi) with something like running an Atari 800 emulator is pointless when the same result can more effectively be accomplished on a desktop machine. In an instance where someone is hacking up yet another case to make something oh-so-retro and needs a way to power whatever it is they want to give the illusion of recreating, sure, this could work. But... Ehhh. There's a billion ways to do this anymore, and unless you're going for the reward of being able to say that you did it, most of those other ways are going to be a lot less painful.

Overall, I'm just glad that I had an exit strategy up front (if it didn't work out, I'd repurpose the RasPi for running some supporting services that were using VM resources I'd rather have back, which is exactly what ended up happening) and that my expectations were very low going in.

Note that none of this is to knock the RasPi: it definitely has its uses, and can be a handy little low-powered machine in the right circumstances. Emulation is not a category in which it excels, however.

> (Yeah, it's a necrothread, who cares).

Totally worth resurrecting; there are plenty of people out there who won't equate '$35 computer' with 'you get what you pay for'.

well you have to be pretty dumb to necro a 4 year old thread just to promote your own work, so I wanted expecting much from it, especially not when the site states "Works fine with MAME 0.122u1 (most of roms pack are setted for this )"

but seriously, the batchfile is just a list of "del" statements with wildcards...

and hilarious entries such as

del *ass*

because there's no way a legitimate setname might have the letters 'ass' in them..

and

del cclimb*
del lbowling*
del gururin*
del gamshara*
del col*97*
del cookb*

which.. aren't 'adult' games...

i'm sorry but this is the most stupid fucking script i've ever seen.

it's more a 'delete things I don't like, and close my eyes at any unintended side-effects' script.

You can simply download my CatVer package (from here: http://www.progettosnaps.net/catver/) and use the "not_mature.ini" file that lists all MAME machines except the adult ones.

And made my collection of Celeron, Pentium 3, Pentium 4 and Athlon XP systems feel slightly less worthless.
