Arcade solo joystick
#342164 - 07/05/15 06:19 AM

What options are there today for an arcade PC USB joystick?
I want to buy a real joystick for my kids and the only one I can find is the X-arcade Solo. I'm fine with that, but I'm curious if there are other options. Any suggestions?

I've a SlikStik that have worked great since I bought it 10+ years ago, but now I want something for the kids that they can have on their desks and easily push away when not in use. Before the SlikStik I had the HotRod which I also liked. I however have not tried the X-arcade, but after reading reviews (years ago) my understanding is that it have kind of a "cheaper" feel. Do we have any owners here that can confirm X-arcade Solo vs the competition?
Have the product changed over the years, or is the same parts used as it had 10 years ago?

btw. I'm visiting MameWorld daily, but haven't posted in a looong time. I noticed my account was no longer active. Did the accounts got reset when moving from .net to .info, or when did that happen?

I might also add that building my own joystick is not an option. I'm just not a handy guy, so I want something ready to plug in that just works.

It's great if Windows detects it as a joystick, but it's also ok if it works as keyboard (like the SlikStik).

Lots of people are making single player sticks - look on ebay, possibly even locally on CL (or the equivalent if you're not in the US) - for around a hundred bucks, that use arcade-grade controls (often Sanwa or Seimitsu). There's also a consumer model I've seen that's made all of plastic that I've been told is pretty decent.

Google 'arcade stick' or 'fight stick'. Also, some folks at BYOAC may be making such things.

Tnx. Well, I sure Googled before posting, but haven't found much.
btw. Do you mean craigslist when writing CL?

I did pick up a HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai, which at first glance and test run appears fine. I do like that it pops up in Windows as a real joystick. Will need to test a lot more before any final judgement though.

Also have the X-arcade Solo on order and it should arrive tomorrow. Don't have too much hope for this, and especially don't like their "cable solution". I also assume you can't attach two of these without extensive key re-assigning, if even at all possible.

If you have any specific suggestions for other arcade joysticks, please provide links.

CL is Craigslist, yes.

The HORI looks good. More than I thought. An X-Arcade dual stick is $150 or sometimes on sale for a hundred dollars. I don't whether the Solo is similar, it should say on the product page, but the regular and tank sticks have two programming modes so that you don't have to mess with changing your emulator keycodes - or if your emulator/etc doesn't support keycode changes.

For other things, like I said, BYOAC. Searching I got these:

I've looked into most joysticks found when doing a basic search, especially the ones available via Amazon.

Most of these joysticks are not made for PC, but instead for PS3/PS4/X-box. That is ok as long as they work on a PC. If I'll buy a console joystick I definitely prefer if it's compatible with PS4 as any joystick for PS4 are known to work flawlessly with a PC.

One company that pops up are Eightarc/Qanba. Their joysticks got pretty good reviews, but they don't appear very active. No news on their website in over a year and no PS4 support.
http://www.eightarc.com/

Hori, which I already purchased from, is available with a few models, with PS4 support. I would definitely prefer if they were more colorful, as I much prefer yellow/orange etc and not the all black that their Real Arcade Pro. 4 Kai is.
http://stores.horiusa.com/

Then we have MadCatz, which have a few models, many that are not available to buy (out of stock everywhere). They don't seem to have received as high ratings as the competition, but still ok though.
http://store.madcatz.com/categories/fightsticks/

If Eightarc or Qanba were available for PS4, or at least showed that they're still alive I would buy one of their offerings and try it out.

Now I'm leaning to test MadCatz Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition 2, or buy one of Hori's other offerings, unless someone points me to some other joystick to check out.

The X-arcade Solo was ok to play with, but a deal-breaker is that it always uses its "slot 1" default settings when starting up, i.e. you have to manually load any settings you have stored in slot 2, 3 or 4 every single time!!! I'll confirm this with their support, but if this isn't fixable I'll send it back.

Any input of any of these joystick are appreciated.

Umm, that shouldn't be the case, else there'd be no reason for them. Slot 1 is, like, rom. Slot 2-4 are ram, hence programmable and stay that way. Should fuckin be.

But, the Hori looks good, and satisfies your PS4 gig. And unless it's pink, who cares? (Not that I'd care much if it worked how I wanted an all....)

I contacted X-arcade support about the need for manually have to load the desired config each time (by pressing the button in the back twice) and they're sending a new PCB that should fix the issue. I.e. it looks like it's been like that for years and that they just recently fixed it. I was told the Solo joysticks they had in stock still had the old PCB, but any new joysticks they build should have the new. Expect to get the new PCB in the next few days.

The two cables hanging out of the back on the X-arcade bugs me, especially when I slide it around on the desk. If the new PCB turns out ok, I might keep it anyway though. Still need to play more, but I'd say the X-arcade joystick is probably preferred for games that requires precision, like e.g. the later levels of Scramble. I do prefer the buttons on the Hori though as I seem to get tired fingers pretty quick after smashing the X-arcade buttons.

Still tempted to try the Mad Catz:

or probably the soon to be released Ultra Street Fighter IV edition as it does have more colorful buttons:

I don't recall havin no trouble like that with the dual stick in '03....but that was a long time ago.

The Madcatz look like they're using at least knock-off arcade parts.

X-Arcade buttons are similar to standard happ buttons with cherry switches. I still use them, but my favorites are the flat Seitmitsus. Unfortunately, they're made only for metal control panels.
