Mame NeoGeo display oddness
#362246 - 01/05/17 12:50 AM Attachment: neogeo.png 244 KB (0 downloads)

Hi guys,

I'm having issues with the display on NeoGeo games. Basically, the bottom of the display - a strip of about 5 or six pixel rows - is wider than the rest. I've changed video settings to "screen 0 cropped" but the whole display narrows, meaning the wider strip is still present.

Any ideas on how I can solve this? Thanks.

Tab -> Slider Controls -> Screen Horiz Stretch

Thanks, that DOES work but what about when I apply screen curvature in HLSL? Is there no way I can solve this if I curve the display?

Thanks also for the super-fast reply :-)

First you have to select 'stretched' in the video options menu whilst within the game, all the Neo Geo games have this 'stretch' option because of the issue you've highlighted.

Then use the horizontal & vertical stretch sliders to fine tune the display:

until you get something like my output:

What is the settings in mame.ini that removes this bug without using HLSL or other video effects ?
I can only select "video plugin" - "screen 0 cropped" in MAME's internal UI but I don't know what is the setting in mame.ini for fix this.
I've created "source\neodriv.ini" so all Neo-Geo games use this fix.

Also, shouldn't the video resolution be 320x224 instead of 302x224 ? The game info shows 320x224 but the visible game is 302x224. Is this a bug in the Neo-Geo video renderer ?

Never mind. you need to change the -view parameter, but if you use
-view "Cropped"
it doesn't work. You must use
-view "Screen 0 Cropped"
then it works.

I'll update my fronted to include both "Cropped" and "Stretched" screen view.

No, this is lazy game programmers assuming monitors would always be CRTs with generous overscan. They probably thought it was a great optimization not drawing the two edges of the tilemap.

One of the SNK development tools didn't show the eight pixels on each side of the frame. The designers used the tool, and QA never cared about the garbage on the sides on target hardware.

If you use artwork, it gets covered up. This is already correct right? so no additional adjustment is necessary?

Some of us like the blank space on the sides.

Like I said, negligent and lazy. I never shipped a console game where I couldn't see it all the way to the border on all 4 sides.

Yeah, but would you have failed Lot Check if you hadn't? If not, you're probably just bitter that you weren't that clever back then.

amazingly there are still games that have shipped in recent years that have issues near the screen edge often only a line or two, but it's really noticeable on modern screens.

I've seen a few games where menus and stuff are just overlays and they don't always reach the entire screen - they cut off one or two pixels too short. Just enough to be noticeable.
