> the US authorities don't just want to listen to all communication, they want total control.

The current trend in US government is ALL about state control, from state-controlled corporations, takeover of banks, controlling delivery of services (healthcare, energy cap and trade, energy moritoriums), controlling cash flow, erosion of private property rights thru aberrations of 'eminant domain', erosion of privacy through unfettered gps tracking, unfettered tap ability on phone, blackberry, email, and internet, to finally the control of information itself (subsidizing failing yet sympathetic news print, blackballing undesirable news services, news content regulation, 'fairness doctrine', internet regulation, empowering the Justice department authority over URLs).

The US is surrendering its freedoms at unprecidented rates to its government.

The internet is literally the greatest embodiment of freedom in the world. It's the modern equivilant of the "basement printing press." Rather you are living "free" in the West, or trapped in a omnipotent police state like North Korea, Tibet, or the Taliban... there is freedom in the ability to connect to the outside world, and learn and communicate with the rest of the world free of the propaganda and control of the state.

To be able to literally and physically turn off that spigot of information is the ultimate step in establishing the ability to literally and definitively control everything that forms and influences a society.

The idea of "turning off" the internet to 'protect' against a cyber attack is ludicris and a ruse, since shutting down the internet is itself the ultimate assault from which we would be trying to avoid, is it not? The internet was designed at its inception to be infallible to interruption. True, in its current form, the internet can't be 'turned off', but given government regulation of format and provider... that ability can be introduced... completely undermining its purpose and intent. If you circumvent that potential regulation... that makes you a dissident... a black marketeer, a criminal of the the state.

Think about that. It's nuts!

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive.

I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.
