Resolution is pixels - in this case, along the vertical number line, 286 vertical pixels. Lines drawn from those pixels (or trace points) are perpendicular to the axis, so there are 286 horizontal lines.
Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
