there is no more software folder since around MESS 0.100... and also in MESSUI you only configure a software directory to load by using fullpath, not softlists
the right way to store romsets for softlists is one of the following two: either roms/listname/xxx.zip or roms/xxx.zip (of course you can replace roms/ with any other rompath present in your mame.ini).
This means that MAME expects you to store megatech games either in roms/megatech/ or in roms/. The latter is strongly suggested in MAME, since it allows to load both the single carts and the multicart driver without moving the romsets. OTOH, for MESS systems the former is suggested, in order to facilitate the work to tools like clrmame.
However, from the MESS point of view, you are free to store all roms of all systems together with the bioses. in other words you might well have in roms/ a single bublbobl.zip containing all console and computers ports of Bubble Bobble (say NES + GB + SMS etc.) and MESS would be able to load the proper file when requested
