If continually overwriting prior versions of MAME using same folders, then maybe the previous config files are causing a bug issue and those need to be deleted first. That is assuming you were using earlier versions of MAME and reusing the same folders.

Although there have been bug issues with snap images in the past, those type of bugs don't happen as much compared to a user needing to delete out-of-date config file settings when replacing/overwriting old version of MAME with a newer version.

For snaps testing, skip using the frontend and run a variety of games such as Berzerk, Frogger, Asteroid from the commandline. Then create snaps. If vector game snaps do not appear, but Frogger snap image is visible, then that does mean that there was a snaps bug issue with that version of MAME.
