Ah yes! I've had that happen. But if my mind isn't occupied it's seems to happen when I nearly doze off. I equate it to getting a sense or essences of a dream. Like your conscious mind is picking up some lower/deeper random brain activity from your sub-conscious, or whatever is going on in there.
Then there are times I seem to be voicing those random/weird thoughts. They surface as some usually funny and/or incoherent ramblings.
