That Pioneer receiver was a monster. It was made when there was a "power war" going on. The Pioneer SX-1980 has the balls to back up what it said it could do to... 270 watts RMS per channel! A beautiful receiver! I don't doubt for a minute that it would sound better than most of the crap that is made today.
