Good thinking, and a plan that had occurred to me. The risk of breakup being what it is, I decided to first experiment with extending/retracting the landing legs whilst mucking about with attitude controls. I managed to get the engine into a fire-able attitude for altitude, but hit the spacebar instead of shift when I tried to thrust. Dammit.
