There is very little that should bring you to place a comma after "and" in a normal sentence. Given the words used, I'd just go with this:

"Obliteration" is an absolute state. Any modifier should only weaken it.
The obliteration of credibility, however, should be contingent on a serious failing in the particular field of supposed knowledge, not a typographical error or simple misused word.
