You may be SOL, but I'd still plug in the serial number and see what happens.
I hope you got it cheap. I'm always skeptical of drives that don't come either in retail packaging or from known retailers. I tried to save a few bucks once, building a machine for someone else, and got a "Western Digital" bare drive from some shop I'd never heard of before. What I ended up with was a "white label" drive. Allegedly made from Western Digital components, but assembled by some third party and not supported in any way by WDC. I ended up keeping it and getting a real drive for the machine I was building. I think it lasted a whole year before it finally started to flake out.
