Another warning against eBay HDs: I've heard of sellers using those 3.3v LVTTL debug serial cables to wipe the SMART state to a 'clean state' on old used hard disks (resetting number of hours of operation, number of head loads, number of remapped sectors etc) then selling the disks as if they are in far better shape than they actually are, on eBay. They even show you the 'nice looking' SMART stats in their auctions usually! All fake.
After getting burned once on a used hdd (first one had a shitton of bad sectors when i got it, the replacement for that one lasted 9 months before it croaked) I never buy hdds that aren't brand new in package anymore.
