Some days ago, together with fellow programmer Aladar I have released a full ROMhack of the Bubble Bobble coin-op.
I'm confident many people here (where else?) may enjoy it.
Why "Lost Cave"? Because it gathers together the best 100 levels created in-house by Taito for its home/handheld conversions of the popular Bubble Bobble coin-op. It's a huge mash-up which mixes NES, Game Boy, Sega Master System and Game Boy Color exclusive levels and injects them in the original arcade ROMs, creating a fresh gameplay experience while retaining the good, tight, unsurpassed feeling of the arcade machine. The most of the work was actually tweaking those console levels in order to behave consistently inside the coin-op structure.
There's a lot of more stuff inside it. Fully renewed bonus items (coming from various ports and episodes of the saga), a huge new ending screen, new secret rooms. Also, your old secret codes won't work, you'll need to discover the new ones. There are also huge holes and other features which needed proper Z80 ASM hacking by Aladar (don't watch me - I'm the gfx/tweak/level designer)
The patch is meant to work with the bublbobl set under reasonably recent versions of MAME (and, thru' minor fiddling, with pre-2005 versions too - we're working on that).
Obviously non-profit, totally made by fans for fans, Lost Cave is also a celebration of the late Fukio Mitsuji, who died - at 48 - four years ago (on december 11th, that's why we released Lost Cave on that day). Your feedback is precious and welcome, both bug-wise and design-wise:)
PS Because of CRC checks, the official command-line version of MAME really needs to run the patched game from command-line (ie "mame.exe bublbobl", not from the internal menu) otherwise it won't work. UI versions such as MAMEUIFX don't have this 'issue'.
