Ahh, the thing is you are as much MAME dev as anyone around here, legally. Just give yourself any permission you need.
Perhaps it's unfair but just because other people contributed more or made more important contributions to the project does not make them authorities in regards to license or trademark violations. It's just a bunch of random people, it's a public project. Only Nikola himself has any legal right to make any such objection. It's also only him who can give you any permissions, not any of the avatars around here.
