I've always used fully-merged sets, and that's because my sets are meant for all versions of mame (not just the current version), and also for other emulators with compatible rom loaders (kawaks, nebula, fba, etc).

The downside is that if you use the inbuilt MAME menu, only the parent sets will show. This is because the menu looks for named zip files. The clone zips aren't there, so they don't appear. You're better off with a real frontend anyway. Even the much-maligned mameui does it properly.

Never used 7zip, and very rarely use clrmamepro, although I'd guess there wouldn't be any noticeable time difference.
