We're talking about how you properly attribute every single line in MAME to a contributor ... not if you trust that said contributor actually had the appropriate rights to submit the code in the first place. Do your part, sort through the code to attribute it all correctly and tell him what parts are his and then you can worry about if he owned the copyright in the first place.
