I always used IRQ5 where possible in the days of DOS-based computers, as it seemed to work best. A lot of software would recommend IRQ7 but I found it to be troublesome, and some computers used it for the printer port. These days Windows has a screen where you can see what IRQ, I/O and MEM are in use already, so just pick something else. Just remember, an 8-bit card cannot use an IRQ higher than 7.
