The HD598's just aren't balanced right either. Extreme lows are ok... like Warren G's Regulators... sounds good when turned up loud.
But mid-bass... Play Gang of Rhythm by R.E.V.O.... When the singer says "bring in the kick drum, it can back the beat"... you can barely hear the damn kick drum at all on the Sennheisers. It's as if they have a blind spot (dunno how to put it in audio terms,)while highs seem almost as emphasized as much as bass is on the Beats.
The Audio Technicas I listened to, however, had a very crisp and clean sound across the whole spectrum (of my hearing at least... remember I've spent a good bit of the last 20 years working on a flight deck, inches away from helicopters, props, and jet engines...).
I'm not a good musician, but I would still say I am one (or was, at least). I've been in marching bands, concert bands, drum and bugle corps, and orchestra, even outside of school (a community band or two, and even a brass choir once during the Christmas season). I'm also not the worst singer in the local karaoke bars... Would you still call me an "armchair listener"? I'm just saying I know a bit about music. More than your average Joe, at least.
Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
