That was pretty awesome.

It's interesting how the answers of Miyamoto are pretty corporate in nature. That's typical of the Japanese "salaryman". That made me go back and look at when the video was made.... 1994. Back then, Japanese devoted their lives to the "company" for the promise of one day cashing in on the corporate success, which, as history has borne out, was a disappointment. Salarymen got shafted by the companies so much so that the new generation rebels against the idea of falling into that rut. Now the image of being a salaryman is basically an insult, like being a buffoon. It'd be curious to hear him being asked those same questions again in today's day and age...

You are the creator of Super Mario. How did the idea come about?

Well, the pixels then were really small, with just a few colors to choose from. He had to wear overalls so you could distinguish arms from body. The only mouth you could make would look like a giant gaping hole in the small face, so it was made to be a mustache instead. I did the best I could with the pixels and colors available, and it turned out to be a smashing success.

Super Mario is very popular around the world. There was even a movie released about him. Do you think he will become as popular as Mickey Mouse?

Will he? Isn't he already? Around the whole world where people know Mickey Mouse, who doesn't also know Mario? The difference is everyone knows Disney, but it's me nobody knows. I created one of the most recognizable characters of all time, and I don't even exist. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Walt!

There is a lot of competition in the market place. What are your thoughts on this?

Well, nobody ever says "Oh, it's on like Pacman" do they? Because when it's on, it's on like mother fucking Donkey Kong, bitches. Mario is so crushing the competition, just invoking the game's title means you're in for a beat-down. Pacman? Who is that has-been? Name one great title Pacman has had since forever. No, I'm not worried about the competition.

Are you still as creative as you once were.

Why wouldn't I be? I'm just taking direction from the suits like everyone else here, though, and all they're fixated on is budgets and the bottom-line. That creativity is still in me, though. It's just been held down by the Man, riding on the back of MY idea, rehashing the shit out of it for every penny they can squeeze out of it for themselves. Think about this: I literally designed one of the most popular, most recognizable gaming image of all time. You'd think that would at least get me a corner office in this shit-hole, but I'm still just a cog in this machine, in the same damn cubical as all the other monkeys in the company. I'm not the one sitting at the giant oak desk in the executive suite flipping through scrap books and suckin' on my cigarette like a cocksucker. And they've made it clear if I ever tried to go indy with an idea, they'd toss my ass out so fast, it'd make your joystick spin. That makes me a little nervous. But yeah, sometimes I question whether I am a manager or a creator.

Can you still draw?

What's with all these questions implying I'm all washed up, or something? Shit. Can I still draw. Go fuck yourself. Mario isn't just some yellow circle I traced thirty years ago. Watch this...
