So long as the individual rom sizes and names match what MAME expects, the whole romset is complete and launch your emulation from the command-line, you can attempt to use whatever you have available for emulation even if the checksums do not match. All compatibility and fitness claims are gone once you do this, however (i.e you are on your own for support).
