The MCU emulation doesn't affect gameplay in MAME. The MCU is more effective as protection against region-swapping on a PCB than anything else, and the game doesn't use all the features of the MCU program. As others have said, it will help people who want to repair (or region-swap) boards, and it also documents how the system actually works.
