A cache system is not possible, not the way EL was programmed. I tried that once and to keep checking the actual images for changes against the cache database actually takes LONGER and it uses 4 times more CPU cycles than just reading the file and creating the thumbnail.

this is not a problem since EL only creates a thumb when the game becomes visible in the screen.

HDDs these days are fast. EL is not designed to work in a network or even access HDDs remotely.
It's designed for a desktop with local drives.
