afaik the muffled sound is a result of various analog filters on the PCB that are now emulated, as part of the discrete audio section which includes the drums etc.
the drums themselves aren't used by kung fu master, but the sound section is identical to the games that do use them.
it was changed because changing it was the correct thing to do..
