Master Boy does use a MCU, though a conventional EPROM-based type. In fact, it's the same type of MCU (HD647180X) that Toaplan used as a sound processor in their early-'90s games, none of which had sound in MAME until 0.181 (and there are a few that still haven't been dumped).
