The Super Real Darwin Award [7-11-2017]

“0.35b12: Boss order in Super Real Darwin should be correct [Jose Miguel Morales Farreras]. Added 2nd player.”

MAME 0.35b12 was released on 1 May 1999, that was the last development on the driver that had any real impact on the gameplay.

The change listed above, made in 1999 is the source of the following piece of code in the simulation of the i8751 protection device that Super Real Darwin makes use of. Prior to this the boss order was *completely* wrong.

Maybe it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the above piece of simulation code is incorrect, and has been incorrect since 1st May 1999, over 18 years ago.

The value in the table for Boss 6 is actually incorrect as the comment speculates is possible.

I’ve had to bump the interleave in the driver significantly to stop it missing protection commands from time to time and crashing (hopefully what I’ve done is good enough) but the actual data from the MCU is now 100% correct to the original as we’re running the actual MCU code rather than a simulation.

Congrats to all involved. talk about the length of time going by when game is emulated/ better improved for first time in quite some time.

Putting this on my own perspective timeline when first following MAME.

MAMEdev member Juergen B. had written Pong simulation code and had Pong supported sometime in 1999 when Nicola and Mirko were running MAME back then. I first found out about MAME until spring 2000 [April or May...don't recall]

Just before .36 final was released, Nicola made decision to have the gambling games removed with exception of the 'Just-for-fun' variety. And also any of the non-cpu games Pong was only supported non-cpu game iirc. Monaco GP wasn't supported in MAME. Pong was simulated with some flaws iirc. And Nicola's decision to remove any of the supported gambling games was a specific necessity at that time.

It was either 2004 or 2005 when Aaron Giles took over MAME release duties and allowed gambling video games to be supported once again in MAME. And support for Pong was readded in May 2012 after all the previous 2 or 3 years of overhaul of MAME code having cpus being treated as devices just like any other hardware chip on a pcb which meant non-cpu games could be supported.

And then MAME incorporates all of MESS in 2014 to be MAME what it is at this present time. And finally Super Real Darwin is improved for first time.

A freakin long time. I wonder how long the wait will have to be for Dragon's Lair or Space Ace can ever be fully supported in MAME. *somewhat kidding*

btw: To put this in another perspective....I last played a real Gremlin's Frogs arcade cab in either 1979 or 1980 ...I don't recall and last played Gremlin/Sega Carnival in 1981. I never saw another Frogs cab in person since then. But in spring 2000, I discovered MAME and recall visiting JoseQ's Emuviews web site and downloaded both Gremlin's Frogs rom set and Gremlin/Sega Carnival rom set and played the two games for first time in nearly 20 years.
