Sorry if this is a bit late. I don't check these other forum sections too often.

When I was having trouble with mine (the same thing was happening) it was the hard-drive. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems that since those small mechanical drives are moved around a lot, that's not really good for them. I had the same thing happen to a hard drive based MP3 player I had many years back. Drop it just the right way one time and it's useless.

Rarely I was able to get it to boot correctly and have the OS load. I eventually moved everything over to a SSD. I don't recall how I did that exactly, but I know I had a bit of trouble with it before I finally got it to work.

It seems like I had to make the HD partition my OS was installed on smaller so I could transfer it to the SSD. But if his HD is ruined, this might not even be possible. There's no telling if installing an SSD (after you've transferred everything over to it) will still work. If not, you've wasted money on an SSD.

Another thing to note... I had to find steps online on servicing my laptop to do this. What order to take things apart. I was quite meticulous in where I placed screws and items I removed to finally get to the hard drive. So, that's another thing to be worried about if someone was going to go about replacing the hd.
