For eight straight hours every night, I enter incoming checks for the IRS; it's the computerized accounting equivalent of factory work. I never ceased to be amazed at how many people cannot properly write a check. Just last night, someone made their payment out to "Eternal Revenue Service". Checks over a million dollars aren't unusual, and I can't imagine someone being smart enough to have an income they owe a million dollars in taxes on but not smart enough to write a check.
Anyway... something the average person is not aware of is that if there is a difference between the text-written amount (the "legal line") and the numeral amount (the "courtesy box") on a check, the text-written amount is what counts. I see it happen a LOT; someone will write "$5,500.00" in the courtesy box, then write "Five Thousand Dollars" on the legal line, then wonder why April 16 comes and they get socked for penalties for paying $500 short.
Don't let this happen to you!
