Upgraded sdlmame...controller no longer working. Compile Option?

I upgraded my sdlmame from .148->.159->.160 and every since after .148 my xbox 360 controller no longer works...I mean sdlmame does not respond to the controller. The controller/xboxdrv still works with no issues...I have it working in QMC2 for menu navivgation. But in stand alone sdlmame, sdlmame will not respond to the controller. In mame.ini I made sure to have `joystick 1`.

I compiled .159 and .160 manually from the github site with just the simple 'make' method. Was there something extra I needed to do for joystick support?
