Need AGP ArcadeVGA Card
#238921 - 11/14/10 11:34 PM

Hey Guys, I am in need of an AGP based ArcadeVGA card. I just got done putting together my MAME PC to discover they no longer offer AGP through Ultimarc, and I hardly wish to start oer with a PCI system. Please email me at shaunhadley1984@hotmail.com if youve got one. THANKS!

I've been after one of these too. Loads of people use old mobos for MAME cabs, seems a shame that they can no longer use an ArcadeVGA.

My solution was to get an ATI Radeon 7000 card from ebay, which is basically the same card as the old AGP ArcadeVGA, and use it with Soft15khz, worked perfectly and dirt cheap too.

Yeah, shame there's no guide to converting one of those ATi cards into a ArcadeVGA. It's not like it's gonna harm Ultimacrs bussiness now they discontiued them :P

Hmm... Come to think i do need a very cheap VGA card

There are actually some guides floating around on the Internet (Google is your friend) that show you how to dump the BIOS from an ArcadeVGA and modify it so you can flash it to a generic ATI card with the same video chip. The big problem is that the more different the cards are (i.e. memory type and quantity) the more you have to modify the BIOS and the more likely that it won't work.

I suggested a long time ago that Andy should really ONLY make a PCI version of the ArcadeVGA. That way, it will work with pretty much every computer made since 1995, including those nifty Mini-ITX motherboards that just have a single PCI expansion slot. Heck, even the absolute latest and greatest Intel Core motherboards still have at least ONE conventional PCI slot. And it's not like the ArcadeVGA card really needs a high-bandwidth bus for displaying MAME on an arcade monitor anyway.

If MAME were the only thing people wanted to use it for, yes. But a lot of folks, not all of them young cusses, want to be able to run....stuff....like SFIV on the same system.

Soft15khz is the option over trying to convert your card to an AVGA. I mean, come on, kids. I prefer to play with soft15 versus hunting for an AVGA. Of course, even more fun was finding that an old pci card I bought in lot of 'junk' cards to use as a 'dummy' card, happened to be a Riva TNT (16mb). AdvanceMAME anyone?! On on old PII with win98 (or even '95), hell yeah! I don't know whether I'll ever use that thing - but it just feels cool ta have around!

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.

I'm an advocate for Soft15KHz too, but they still make PCI cards that could play SF IV at acceptable frame rates...

HIS H545H512P Radeon HD 5450 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161353

It's not cutting edge by any means, but it would work.
Also, this is just what Newegg carries. I'd be willing to bet there's even newer chips still being used on PCI cards if you look around a bit.

The biggest limitation with PCI is bandwidth across the bus, though I don't think that would be an issue with typical arcade cabinet resolutions.
