Can't get proper picture from ArcadeVGA card
#263133 - 08/27/11 05:48 PM

Hello everyone,

I’m new to this forum and very eager to get my MAME machine going!

I purchased the J-Pac and ArcadeVGA (PCI-E) cards from www.ultimarc.com but I’m not able to get a proper picture on my arcade monitor (which is a Philips A48ABK05X).

My base cabinet for this project is the Blood Bros. game – info about it can be found here: http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=blood-bros.&page=detail&id=291

How do I determine the refresh rate of this monitor?

When I first plugged my arcade monitor into the VGA port on the card (at the same time as my PC monitor was plugged into the DVI port), I did not get a picture on the arcade monitor at all. However, after installing the ArcadeVGA driver, I got a rolling picture on the arcade monitor but at the same time my PC monitor lost its picture. Is this how it should work?

Also, the SYNC OK LED on the J-pac card is off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It means your card and screen are operating at different rates. The scrolling picture is the sync not syncing. Your ArcadeVGA may be set to the wrong refresh rate (like 24KHz), causing both monitors not to respond right.

Blood Bros. uses a standard 15KHz arcade monitor. Do you still have the game PCB? Does the monitor work right with the game PCB plugged in?

Are you sure that the ArcadeVGA can do 15KHz on the VGA output while you have a PC monitor plugged into the DVI port at the same time? I don't know if it can but it's something to consider.

I have tried all three refresh rates of the ArcadeVGA card (15, 24 and 31 kHz) and none of them works.

Can anyone tell me - should I be getting a picture on my arcade monitor (via the ArcadeVGA card) without having the ATI drivers installed? Or do the ATI drivers have to be installed for this to work properly?

Thank you for your suggestions. Yes I have the game PCB and it works just fine. I will try with just the arcade monitor pulgged into the ArcadeVGA card but I believe that both video outputs should work at the same time.

I'm fairly certain it can't, actually. Plugging in the PC monitor will probably make it output VGA sync, which will confuse the arcade monitor.

you have never mentioned using extended desktop that separates the monitors. Are you using extended or mirror?
The monitor is 15.7khz. Make sure that you have the correct drivers from Ultimarc before you try any setting changes.

15Khz will not work if the ArcadeVGA driver is not installed. 24 and 31Khz modes will not work because your monitor (probably) doesn't support them.

You should not install any ATI drivers. Install the ArcadeVGA driver.

It's possible that your arcade monitor is switching itself off automatically because the signal you're feeding it is out of range. At least it's not broken, it works with the Blood Bros PCB.

I'm pretty sure (I don't own an ArcadeVGA) that you will not be able to use your arcade monitor and your PC monitor at the same time, no matter if the drivers are installed or not. Unless your arcade monitor has 31KHz support. Look for a jumper or switch on the monitor PCB but be careful.
