PC BIOS error
#265803 - 10/06/11 10:43 PM

I swear I tried everything.

I have a HP board (FIC VI31) that boots to the Award BootBlock bios and claims the bios has a wrong checksum, i.e., it got corrupted. Reading through various things and obtaining all equipment, nothing I tried seems to get me past the process of this:

Code:

AWARD BootBlock BIOS V1.0

BIOS Checksum wrong
Checking Drive A...
INSERT SYSTEM BOOT DISK

If I have no floppy, the bios keeps asking for a disk.
If I have one in, the same happens
If I have a 1.44mb floppy formatted with a bootable dos, it says the same, but pressing enter returns:

Code:

System Halted.

If I have all required files (DOS, autoexec, flasher, bios) the same happens.
If I have a 720kb floppy with the same files, it returns the same.

It seems like it just cannot read the floppy controller. The board doesn't have any ISA ports either.

Short of buying a flashed BIOS i'm skint for any last ideas. To make matters worse, I have only the floppy till end of tonight..

Were you flashing the BIOS when this all started? If not maybe you could replace the MB battery and try resetting the BIOS. Any bulging capacitors on the MB?

No buldging caps and it's benn without a battery or power at all for more then 4 days now. The BIOS randomly corrupted itself after some software installs. It could have been a low-level virus, or the chip has stopped working. I hope the former.

More likely motherboard damage, bad RAM, or a bad processor.

Have you tried the obvious of Clearing the CMOS settings?

Turn off the PC and unplug the power cord
Move the CLR_CMOS jumper cap from pins 1-2 (normal) to pins 2-3 (clear CMOS).

If that doesn't make it work then you will need to remove the MOBO completely from the case and inspect it for visible damage.

Sometimes the combination of replacing the standoffs then remounting the MOBO after reseating the CPU with fresh thermal paste (when MOBO is flat on wooden table or similar, outside of case) does indeed fix certain boot issues.
