MAME on AMD A10-5800K
#304968 - 02/27/13 02:51 AM

Working on my latest cocktail cabinet and pretty happy with how things are coming, it's time for me to consider the PC specs as woodwork is almost done. Basically, this is going to be a MAME 0.148 only cabinet so I'm not interested in modern PC gaming. Here's the specs I'm looking but was hoping to get some advice.

AMD A10-5800K APU
ASRock FM2A85X Extreme4-M Motherboard
2x4GB DDR3 1600
450W Corsair Power Supply

I've heard some say that the Intel i3 (even lower clock) can handle MAME well but other insist that i5 is the best for MAME if going the Intel route. Anyways, would love to hear some feedback especially with MAME performance.

Spend $15 more and get an Intel CPU. You'll be glad you did.

This particular model appears to be one of the better i3 chips available...

Intel Core i3-3225 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I33225
$144.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116774
Also: $10 off w/ promo code EMCXVVV56, ends 2/28

This specific model is a 55W (that AMD chip is 100W) Ivy Bridge dual core with hyperthreading (ghetto quad core).
It also has integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000. It's the only Core i3 with HD 4000.

Here's a cheap motherboard to pair with it ($37 cheaper than the AMD board)...

ASRock B75M-DGS LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
$52.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157335

...and some highly rated memory...

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
$55.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

Grand total for above three items... $253.97
You can't beat that with a stick.

Not sure what power supply you're getting but it should be fine.
Personally, I only buy SeaSonic power supplies, but I've heard good things about Corsair units.

Like krick said, go the extra few bucks and get an Intel CPU, for MAME and other emulators there is no comparison.

From what I can tell from benchmarks I find online, the two CPUs in question are fairly close performance-wise in general purpose benchmarks. Which means that the Intel chip should spank the AMD chip when running emulators. The other thing that skews the benchmarks is when they include graphic performance in the benchmarks. AMD graphics are generally better than the Intel graphics.

The only drawback I can see is that the Core i3 doesn't have an unlocked multiplier, which means that overclocking is difficult if that's something you plan to do.

Intel Core i3-3225
3.3GHz
Dual Core
Hyperthreading
22 nm Ivy Bridge 55W
3MB L3 Cache
Intel HD Graphics 4000

AMD A10-5800K APU
3.8GHz (4.2GHz Turbo)
Quad-Core
32 nm Trinity 100W
4MB L2 Cache
AMD Radeon HD 7660D

If you plan on overclocking, you might want to look at this Core i5 processor...

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K
$219.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

...and pair it with a good Z77 motherboard...
ASUS P8Z77-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
$119.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131832

Krick, funny you post that CPU since it's the one sitting in my wish list on new egg right now. The debate I was in was between that and the A10. Choice seems pretty clear at this point to go with the i3. Anyways, after the haswell comes out, the i5 price should be in my price range.

The power supply I bought already since I got a good deal with promo on it a few weeks ago.

Corsair 430W Modular power supply

Awesome input. Helped me get off the fence and get this going!
