Help with NEOGEO AES System please!
#312860 - 08/14/13 01:15 PM

Hi to all.

I´ve got a neogeo AES home console with 5 carts but all games have little graphical glitches since the neogeo logo show up.
To exemplificate on Art Of Fighting (game with most graphical erros) in game play all chars have little squares inside it.
Samurai Shodown give mes wrong POWER bars, etc...
Sound is OK btw...

What can be that? Any chip on mobo?
All contacts and edges are clean....

Neo Geos are very well known for having problems like this when traces are cut or the battery leaks. First step, strip the system down and see if you can see the battery, then check if it looks like it's leaking.

If it is, then you need to neutralize the battery leakage and clean it off. You'll most likely have damaged traces which unless you're pretty good with a soldering iron, it's best to find someone who can/will help you.

If it's not leaking then check the board to see for any scratches, cut green traces or otherwise chips and components that look damaged.

Either way it looks very much like cut traces so it won't be easily repairable since you'd have to hunt down the cut connections, strip back the protective covering on the traces and reconnect/rewire them. The process can be fairly time consuming and difficult depending on the conditions.

Actually I'd always recommend getting a toothbrush and cleaning the cart connector first. On an AES (home) system it's much more likely than cut traces.

Also the only time I've seen a cap leak in these it's been by the work ram so unlikely to affect gfx.

I'd clean the cart connector first, then remove the cart and turn on the system. You will get a coloured screen which will tell you if any of the rams are bad. It won't always know there's a problem however so take it with a pinch of salt.

Screen error colours are as follows (taken from arcadecomponents.com):

Blue = All tests passed (The AES does not test the Z80 sound IC).
Red = Work RAM error (0x100000 region).
Green = Palette RAM error (0x400000 region).
Yellow = Video RAM error (programmed through custom port).
Pink = BIOS selfcheck error (0xC00000 region).
Cyan = Memory card error (only tested if card in unit and blank).

As I said it can't always detect a problem. The rams may well be fine anyway.

Did you clean the slot?

Might want to clean the connectors on the carts too, at least one of them so you can have a nice clean test cart.

Do you find the issue is worse with higher meg games?

All contacts are clean for sure. The worst game is Art Of Fighting maybe due the expressive zoom used on the system
