Will this be good enough for my first MAME cabinet build? new
#321880 - 02/12/14 10:16 PM

Hi,
I've recently started building a MAME cabinet, and wanted to use this as the PC -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-GA-E350...ywords=mini+itx

I intend to only run MAME games from 70s - approx 1992. No 3D at all, but I will be using Hyperspin.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

You won't get the raw power of an Intel-based desktop system, but just reading up on it quickly, it seems like it should be adequate. Pretty nice, for the money.

I don't think you're going to be happy with this board unless you run a really old version of MAME.

According to the Passmark CPU benchmark, an AMD E-350D is slower (score: 696) than an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (score: 704), which came out in 2005.

Check out their list of "Low Mid Range CPUs", it's near the bottom...
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/midlow_range_cpus.html

Also Hyperspin requires more CPU power than most people realize and some of the reviews I've seen claim that this board doesn't run flash content very well, and Hyperspin is flash based.

Okay, I have the option of using this PC instead -

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4800+ Processor
2 GB RAM
250 + 120 GB Hard Drives
Asus M2N-VM DVI Socket AM2 Motherboard
nVidia Geforce 8400 GS

It seems like a better idea to be honest..

Neither of the configurations you've mentioned are a good idea.

When it comes to MAME, Intel kicks AMD's ass.

Not to say he can't find a better system, but my current MAME system *is* an Athlon 64 from 2005. I always run the latest build and I can run most early games at 100%. Is it the ideal platform for a kick-ass emulation system? Definitely not, but if it gets the job done and you can put a system together for ~$150USD, I feel like you could do worse.

I've never used Hyperspin, so I can't speak to that, but I wouldn't let a frontend dictate my hardware choice. There are enough of them out there, and some are pretty lightweight.

Yeah, an Athlon 64 from 2005 will still run plenty. Taito F3 and Konami GX will require an old MAME version (both drivers got a lot slower in the last couple years) and anything with polygons or a 100MHz+ CPU is right out, but a 2005 system will have no problem running fairly heavy drivers like Sega Y-Board and System 32.

Can it handle games with discrete audio?... Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Phoenix

They've gotten way more CPU intensive since they stopped using samples.

My Socket 939 Athlon 64 had no trouble with Galaxian, Gyruss or Donkey Kong. Or Pole Position, which has two 16-bit CPUs as well as discrete audio.

I did notice that I have to turn multithreading on to run Donkey Kong at full speed. Other than that, they all run fine.

Thanks for your help. How about an AMD Sempron or Intel Pentium G2020? Would that be significantly better?

I have a Sempron 140 (2.7GHz) single core as my MAME system (not in a cabinet however), which is just fast enough to run Tekken 2 at full speed with current MAME. Anything later than that game hardware-wise is out of the question, unless you want to listen to the game stutter constantly (e.g. Tekken 3/Tag, which have a faster CPU to emulate and use 3D backgrounds instead of flat "square" arenas). If you are talking dual-core CPUs (or better) and/or 64-bit OS, it should open up even more games. My machine only runs 32-bit XP however and the board's BIOS doesn't support unlocking the second core - otherwise it would be an Athlon II X2 4400e according to here.

That's interesting. I'm currently looking to buy a dedicated MAME PC that's capable of running most 80's-to-early-90's games at full speed, using shaders (to get old school monitor effects).

What (presumably Intel) CPU should I be looking at, as a minimum?

Is the current batch of on-board graphics hardware good enough, or should I be looking to get a dedicated card?

As a minimum I'd say any Core i3 at 2.8 - 3GHz will be fine.
If you're going to use HLSL you'll need a dedicated video card.

Thanks.

I was considering the following PC:

Sure the Intel HD 4400 graphics wont cut it, then? I just want to be sure as I've seen GTA V running at an acceptable rate on an i3 with HD 4400.

I can't say for sure. My guess would be probably not. Anyway if you find that it doesn't you can always add a real video card later. Be careful and check first that the power supply is adequate, you might need to upgrade that as well.
