Probably a lot of these but: "Looking for PC build advice" new
#330503 - 08/24/14 07:20 AM

Hi all,

Newbie here.

I'm building a Mame PC for a buddy and just wanted to check if these specs work. I've built 2 high end full tower PCs so I've got a bit of an idea on how the hardware works and what brands to trust but haven't had a chance to do something like this. Here is the parts list I've currently cobbled together:

Is it too little? Too much? Meh?

(Sorry mods, wasn't sure if I should necro an old thread or just start a new one.)

I'd go with "Meh".

I can think of a few ways to improve on it (256GB SSD for the OS, Dual Channel RAM, real video card, silent 3rd party CPU cooler) but it's fine as it is. It'll definitely play all the classics.
I'm not sure how well the Intel HD4400 stacks up against MAME's HLSL effects. It'll probably do fine up to 1080p.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Here's an updated list:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bpkrqs

Changes:
I added a GTX 750Ti (which shouldn't get bottlenecked by the CPU).
Changed RAM to a 2x2 DDR3-1600.

I'm not going with an SSD because my friend's trying to keep it below $600. Otherwise I'd toss in maybe 2 64GBs in RAID 0 for the OS.

My main concern with an aftermarket cooler is the case. I've got a Noctua NH-U12S that I could donate but it'd probably be too big. Maybe the Nocuta NH-L12 would work. I'd add an external radiator and do water cooling but there is only 1 grommet in the back, so not enough space for both an in and out tube. I'd tell him to just leave the case panels off but then there likely wouldn't be enough air flow over the motherboard and RAM since this would likely be tucked into a MAME cabinet.

Maybe I just need to change the case hahaha.

If it's going to be stuck inside a MAME cabinet it doesn't need to silent enough to warrant air cooling anyway. It doesn't need to be pretty either. You could keep that case, leave the panels off like you say and point a huge, slow moving fan at it. Maybe install a fan on the cabinet itself close to the PC, for sucking out the hot air...or get a cheaper/uglier/roomier case.

Now that you've added the 750Ti I'd get a 5-600W PSU for it, a stronger PSU will be doing less work, generate less heat and run more efficiently.
