im setting up a cabinet and have got as far as setting up the pc with freedos and being able to boot up arcadeos which runs dmame and it plays fine on a normal lcd monitor
but when i connect it to the original arcade monitor (via the vga cable harness) the pictures a mess. im guessing this is because its running at the normal 31khz
is there a setting in arcadeos, dos mame or in freedos to tweak the khz on the pc's video card?
thanks

DOS MAME is so ancient at this point that I doubt you'll get much if any support here. Try the ArcadeControls or BYOAC forums or something.

Use AdvanceMAME!

Definitely. Groovy tracks current MAME, while AdvanceMAME is stuck in 2005 forever. Groovy also has more advanced (heh) monitor tweak features.

You're missing that the person mentioned freedos and arcadeos, suggesting they have an old-ass machine. AdvMAME .106 is '06, and their machine may not handle that given the above.
As for more advanced, I'd say no. AdvanceMAME has auto syncing based on a simple clock line, and real-time mode changing. GroovyMAME don't neither of 'em. It didn't easily handle my Billabs digital multisync, which was the most capable arcade multisync made - comparable to if not besting the top line NEC/Mitsubishi dm presentation monitors - whereas AdvanceMAME has provided.
But for those wanting to keep current, I think baseline is capable enough for native display.
