Major MESS Artwork update! new

Hey folks,
The MESS Artwork page has received a major update today!
http://www.mess.org/artwork

What's New:
- Added all of the handheld external artwork from Olivier Galibert, kevtris, hap and co. Over 47 new artworks added, REQUIRED for the games to appear properly!
- Added over twenty-five new Artwork Preview snaps (from AntoPISA: http://www.progettosnaps.net/mess/)
- Added: Comboman's Speak & Spell, Speak & Math, and TRS-80 artwork (never posted on the forums!)
- Added: Dullaron's NeoGeo Pocket and NeoGeo Pocket Color artwork (previously posted on the MAME Artwork forum)
- Added: Nightvision's Atari 2600 artwork (previously posted on the MAME Artwork forum)
- Added: Waremonger's Game Boy Color artwork (previously posted on the MAME Artwork forum)
- Updated DAT and (MAMEUI) INI files.

- Any 640x480 Artwork Preview needs a second look to make sure it is the correct resolution / aspect ratio: 4004clk, aim65 (internal artwork was just edited in MAME/MESS today too), ccmk1, ccmk2, junior, kim1, mm4, mm5, amsterd, dallas, dallas16, dallas32, glasgow, monteciv, rebel5, roma32, mpf1, mpf1b, mpf1p, sym1, simon, supercon, tec1, 990189, vectrex

- Others that just look "weird" and need to be investigated: c128, a2600, gamegear, sms. nc100, ti85 (too short!), tg16, c64?

- Inaccurate and need to be replaced: nes, snes

- Comboman sent me Wizatron artwork which I've misplaced and need to get again. I think he had issues with the clickable portions of it though.

- If someone could list the "crap quality"/too low res. ones, that would be appreciated.

'Sup Stiletto.

The file you have posted is an old one that only displayes the Adventure cartridge. I'm attaching one that includes views for several more games, which can be easily selected using the "-view" command line switch.

Here's the Wizatron/Math Magic artwork. I looked into it more and the problem is definitely in MESS (at least in the version I'm using). The clickable areas work fine in windowed mode, but in full-screen mode they are offset downward about half the width of a button.

What version are you running? Windows MAME 0.164 64bit, or something else? If I can duplicate this, might formally get it onto MAMETesters...

hap is unable to duplicate your issue on latest (ie. it works properly for him), I will try myself.

Not to make you busier, but latest MESS also supports Speak & Read, Touch & Tell too, if you want to take a stab at those. Will be in MESS 0.165, or you can compile your own right now.

that looks great. But how do I make it work when I launch a2600? When I go to video options, I don't see anything listed. I saved the .zip file in the artwork folder

I'll give it a shot. Do you have any scans for Speak & Read?

Touch & Tell would be quite a challenge. I think there are multiple overlays/pages for each cartridge and the device knows which overlay is currently installed by optically reading a pattern of holes on the edge of it. Not sure how that would work, since there's no way for the artwork to tell MESS which page it's using. I'll have to think about that one a while. Fortunately Datamath.org has PDFs of all the manuals/overlays.

changes:
- blank.png and dark.png not needed anymore, used a disk element internally instead
- dp vfd elements and button highlights in snmath and snspell(membrane) were at wrong place
- dp and ap vfd elements have different id between 0.159 and latest

To let MAME know the overlay code, use a dummy element with defstate set to overlay code(in decimal!)

Note: both of these images have embedded ICC color profiles, so be sure to convert to an appropriate colorspace (linear?) on import, and export to sRGB or whatnot when done.
Firefox at least I believe tries to load the image as if it is already in sRGB colorspace and the plastic of the S&R looks a puke green color, when it should be bright lemon yellow.

Don't know anything about SNES, but here's the one I made for NES. I did one for C64 too, but I never use it because VICE is still better for it.

Ah, there's still a mistake in snmath.lay here. But I won't fix it: Lord_Nightmare is vectoring the VFD at the moment and we'll add it when finished, looks much better too.

The drawn segments look nice, but the PNG filenames don't have to be the same as the element names. This LAY file gives the same result but uses 1/8th the number of PNG files.

I simply copy/pasted the svg2lay output and added an offset to x/y to move it from 0,0 to the right place.

IMHO any manual optimizations afterwards are a waste of time. Maybe svg2lay itself can be improved: including an optimize/cleanup round.

Specifically, it was created for turning Kevtris's vectored artwork of his VFD games into MAME external artwork. Comboman are you good at vectoring? Like, vectoring this into this:

Hap, I tried this based on the sample code you posted. For some reason it always thinks overlay 9 is installed regardless of which overlay is selected. Can you take a look and figure out what I'm doing wrong?

Huh, the color still seems a bit washed out. Should I convert the source image to srgb on my end and re-upload to reduce the color management issues?

Updated the page again; here is the news (Thanks to Retro27 for the contribution):


- Artwork zip: c64p and pcw8256 new packs. gbpocket, megaduck and pro128 updated packs.

- Artwork preview snapshots updated.

- Dat and ini files updated to 06/11/2015.


For the Mega Duck's artwork, the picture is better than the previous, but if someone had a high-resolution, please contact me!
