Scroll Lock Key and MAME Keyboard Emulation new
#364049 - 03/03/17 09:17 PM

Which key replaces the old Scroll Lock function in notebooks that has no Scroll Lock key? It's needed for switching between natural and emulated keyboards in old computers and I can't do that in my new notebook.

You can change the mapping in the TAB -> Input (general) -> Ui Toggle to whatever you want. You can also start MAME with UI Active by starting MAME --> Configure Options --> Advanced Options --> Look for "Input Option" area and there should be "UI Enable". Toggle this ON and it will start emulation as it does with non-keyboard machines.

From the command line you can use the -uimodekey parameter to specify a key that's to your liking.

I've used "-uimodekey DEL" successfully on notebooks without a SCRLK key.

You could also check if SCRLK can be activated with the Fn modifier key on your notebook keyboard.

He probably has the same issue I do. My keyboard does not have a scroll lock at all. Not even with the fn key. left-alt-prtsc worked for a while but no longer works for me for some reason. I probably did something silly. There is supposedly a registry hack for windows to assign it to another key but I never tried that. I use the same method Tafoid points out. HP laptops seem to not have it. Most Lenovo and Dells do have fn modifiers it seems.

Since scroll lock was mostly used for old IBM PC keyboards to lock all scrolling techniques, it's not really considered useful anymore & you're going to find it more and more common to have keyboards that don't use this function

Windows 11 64 bit OS
Intel Core i7-10700
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
32GB DDR4 RAM

It's still very useful for Excel so I don't think it's going away on "professional" machines. But consumers just browse the web, and hence don't use Excel or other programs for serious work.
