Hey, I just discovered this thread. If you're going high resolution, you may wish to adapt some of the glyphs which have become the standard over at StrategyWiki, and then subsequently copied and spread all over the net without any credit back to SW :/

Of course, if you're keeping the glyphs strictly mono (black & white) then you'll have a harder time replicating many of those without adding some kind of outline to distinguish the joystick ball from the arrows. But you should definitely be able to add the fist and boot into the middle of the punch and kick glyphs.
That iconography, with the joystick ball in the middle, and arrows moving around/through it, is pretty much a universal presentation now, even in the in-game command lists of many fighting games.
