Auto-Stitching of Large Images
09/15/08 10:12 PM

Below is a tutorial posted previously by Aaron Giles, using tools available at the Hugin website: http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

--------------------------------------------

Tools: hugin, autopano.

1. Scan in sections, save as TIFF files.
a. Tip: Do all scans in the same direction, or flipped 180 degrees.
Do not scan multiple sections rotated 90 or 270 degrees away from each
other. This will throw off the stitching!
2. Prerotate all sections to be the same orientation.

3. Open hugin.

4. Switch to Images tab:
5. Select Add Individual Images, and add all the pieces (you can
multi-select).
6. Select all images and click the autopano button to find control
points.
7. Open the Control Points window and look at which images were deemed
to be connected. Sometimes it will find bogus points between two images
that are not adjacent! Delete any bogus control points.

8. Switch to the Control Points tab:
9. Set vertical and horizontal line points across image:
a. Select two images with a shared vertical line (one on the left,
one on the right).
b. Click on the line edge on one, and fine tune to hit the edge.
c. Click on the line edge on the second.
d. Click the Add button to add a point.
e. Select either vertical line or horizontal line from the mode
popup.
f. Repeat for several points (I use 2 horizontal, 2 vertical,
usually bezel edges).

10. Switch to Camera and Lens tab:
11. Select the first image.
12. Enter 10 in the degrees of view (v) box. Click in another text field
to make sure the value takes.
13. Uncheck Inherit for degrees of view (v), horizontal (d), and
vertical (e).
14. Make sure the Lens Correction Parameters (a), (b) and (c) are all
set to 0.
15. For each remaining image select it and then click the New Lens
button.

16. Switch to the Stitcher tab:
17. Select Rectilinear mode.
18. Set Field of View to 45 for both horizontal and vertical.

19. Switch to the Optimizer tab:
20. Make sure all checkboxes are turned off.
21. Click all the checkboxes in the Roll (r) section.
22. Skipping the first checkbox in each group, click all remaining
checkboxes in the fov(v), (d), and (e) boxes.
23. Hit Optimize now! Button and accept the changes.

24. Use preview window to see what it looks like.
25. Adjust the field of view to hold the whole thing.
a. Do NOT adjust center!
b. Drag h or v sliders to expand the horizontal or vertical field
of view.
c. Click update to see the changes.
d. Note that the image will be shoved to one side; you can crop it
afterwards.

26. Switch to the Stitcher tab:
27. Click the Calculate Optimal Size button.
28. Select image format: TIFF
29. Select LZW compression (important!)
30. Check the Soft Blending box.
31. Click the Stitch now! Button. Wait patiently.

32. When finished, open the result in your favorite editor and crop down
to just the bezel.
33. Apply color correction or whatever else needs to be done.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.
