I think most of the throttles in 70s games were momentary switches; and most of the games before '85 required you haul ass most or all of the time, so an analog throttle didn't really help. (Pole Position and PPII might be exceptions.)
Orthogonally, if you like yoke control games, the y axis can used as a throttle, as I'm getting used to currently in my new yoke rig. Not just Star Wars and the like - but Outrun and Spy Hunter. Oh yes.
Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
