RetroUSB, Brazilian method

Today I visited one of the big parallel import malls downtown and bought a 8$ USB DualShock clone gamepad. It registers as "Generic USB joystick" and doesn't need a driver. Works on Windows and in OS X too.

I threw away everything except the main circuit board. There's a separate circuit board for the two analog sticks that I ripped off but then I got phantom movement and button presses all over the place so I had to solder it back on.

Armed with the Atari standard pin-out it was not too difficult, the circuit board even has little solder pads. I cut small pieces of heat shrink tubing to isolate the pins inside the plug just in case. I thought I had a DB9 plug but it's a DB15..doesn't matter. I could have cut off the DB9 plug on the joystick and soldered the wires on directly, but this way I can use the other two old joysticks I have or even a Genesis/Megadrive gamepad, if I ever find one. Button 2 on pin 9 is connected as well for that purpose.
Wrapped the thing in some electrical tape to avoid strain on the solder points.

And...it works! I only had to re-solder one wire

Besides playing Atari 2600/C64/Spectrum games it's great for Bomb Jack, Gyruss, Puzzle Bobble, Time Pilot, Galaga, Mr. Driller and whatever else only uses one button...or no button at all, like Frogger, Lady Bug and Pac Man. Beats the hell out of the useless d-pad on my XBox 360 controller, I almost quit retro gaming because of it.
