We can define perimeter as the distance around the outer edge of a shape or the length of the outline of a shape.

Perimeter helps us to quantify physical space and also provide a foundation for more advanced mathematics found in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

**Formula to calculate perimeter.**

Different shapes have different formulas. For instance;

To find the perimeter of a;square we use;

**Perimeter = Length** **x 4**

To find the perimeter of a rectangle, we use;

**Perimeter = ( 2 x Length ) + ( 2 x Width )**

To find the perimeter of a circle which is also known as the circumference, we use;

**Circumference = π x Diameter**

**Example:**

Calculate the perimeter of a rectangular mat whose length is 4m and width 3m.

Therefore, the perimeter of the mat is 14m.
