Indeed, I wish people understood this. This is late 90s era hackery in MAME-land. Just because it's an FPGA doesn't magically mean it's correct otherwise every piece of bootleg hardware ever made would have been a perfect clone too.
It's the same for stuff with discrete sound, I've heard people say how much more amazing Mister is on some games, but they're using samples, not emulating anything, and it only sounds better because people are expecting to hear those samples, which are in reality less accurate than MMAE's current emulation.
They're good bits of kit, but they're really no less prone to people cheating / taking shortcuts etc. than anywhere else is. (and it's a shame the scene around them is so highly commercial in terms of people expecting to be paid just to port things)
