Re: How to cope with the inevitable Trump Presidency?

I'm currently 83.9% sure we won't have to worry about it. That said, if it happened, it won't affect me much because I'm an educated, upper middle class, white guy with a (foreign born) white wife and a really white looking (blonde haired, blue eyed, fair skin) toddler. However, I can see how Trump's stated policies could have a profoundly negative effect on the Latinos and Muslims I know. As an example, I don't see how you could possibly use a deportation force to round up and deport 11+ million people in 18 months without also detaining 10's of thousands of American citizens until they prove they're legal. Suspicion will be cast on anyone that looks Latino and/or "non-American". In 6 years, I don't want to be reading El Diario de Ana Francisco, the writings of a natural born US citizen who had to live in an attic for 4 years with her illegal alien parents waiting for the Trump's term to end. Trump has never walked back his plan to do this, either because he doesn't want to lose the support of those that got on the train because of it or because that's what he's actually going to do.

As for the Muslims, "calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on" (still on his site) casts every member of that religion as someone Americans should be suspicious of. If we want to catch radical Islamists in the US, the best way to do that will be with help from the Muslim community. If we make them a secondary class of citizens, the odds that they help out are probably lower than the odds of Trump running a successful casino.

Also, if he did decide to use his presidential authority to tear up trade deals and impose the max 15% tariffs then start trade wars with Mexico and/or China, the people that really get fucked are those on the lower ends of the wage scales. Fruits, vegetables and a whole crap load of consumer goods instantly become more expensive without anything automagicially being manufactured and/or grown in the US right away to replace them. It would take time to replace what we buy from China and Mexico but while we wait, that stuff just costs more, making those that make the least bear the brunt. One example is avocados, which I bring up because I fucking love guacamole. 2/3 of our avocados come from Mexico, which is now tariff free due to NAFTA. Tear up NAFTA, and the 29% tariff for most favored trade nations on avocados would apply, at a minimum. Now, 2/3 of our avocado supply costs at least 29% more, raising the average price of avocados to consumers. They probably couldn't replace that much avocado production in California and Florida (or anywhere close to it), so the price is just going to be higher forever. If Trump were to also slap a 15% tariff on top of that, well America's favorite Superbowl dip just got a lot more fucking expensive. The same thing applies to other produce, like mangoes, lettuce, tomatoes (just off the top of my head). Since a higher percentage of income is spent on food by lower income people than any other income group, they're gettin' grabbed by the pussy whether they like it or not.
