Regime Change
#251018 - 04/06/11 03:48 PM

http://mamedev.org

After 6 years of coordinating the MAME project, it is time for me to step aside and let someone else handle day-to-day management. It has been an honor to helm the project for so long, and even though I won’t be handling the regular releases and top-level coordination anymore, I do hope to continue working on modernizing the core, so we are not left with a half-finished effort.

With this changing of the guard, I am pleased to announce that Angelo Salese (aka Kale) has volunteered to step in and take over coordination of the project going forward. Angelo has done a great job improving many drivers over the years, and I am confident he will be an excellent project leader going forward.

I truly see this project as a labor of love and coordination by you has been fantastic. I thank my lucky stars for people like yourself as well as the rest of MAMEDev for their often thankless and enduring efforts towards this project.

I wish Angelo Salese/Kale all the best as well as yourself with whatever future endeavors you embark on; of course this includes your continued contributions to MAME

Take care and again, THANK YOU!

Thanks so much to you, Aaron (and all the DEVs) for your determination and hard work. Despite not getting paid for your efforts, you've managed to do such impressive things so consistently that it's mind-boggling. Great accolades to you!

And "Kale", I'm more than sure that you'll be excellent at handling the project. Your work is hardly anything to scoff at.

Great minds, dedication and hard work that's jaw-dropping. Kudos!

Is this related anything with the latest Mame memory problems with the gui ports ?
Aaron is the guy who made the most popular Sega games(80's) playable in mame.(The 2006 thing = sega driver rewrite)
It is because of him we have the most atari, midway, williams drivers in Mame.
Does this mean Aaron is no more in Mame ?

No. We've said all along that "gui ports" are a terrible idea for exactly this reason (and especially since MAMEUI doesn't have a team to debug this sort of stuff anymore). Frontends like EmuLoader and GameEx are in a much better place.

> Does this mean Aaron is no more in Mame ?

Quoting the post you replied to:

I do hope to continue working on modernizing the core, so we are not left with a half-finished effort.

What? Six long years, and only about 10 000 arcade games!
Anything under 100,000 is not acceptable. Well, many of them are playable, but what about the Demon Front, Raiden 2 and if I remember right - what happened to Donggul Donggul Haerong?!
And that your policy of precision leads to (if judges Naomi / Atomiswave emulation) MAME abbreviation would mean:
Maximum
Accuracy
Minimum
Entertainment

OK, now seriously:
My deep bow for Aaron - thank you for all you do!
Thank you for all your work on MAME!
And as far as Kale concerns I hope He will continue building commenced well!

Great work, thank you.

I think most of us would rather break bricks in the hot sun than code emulators. I remember i use to have a codding program for c.64 when i was a little kid, 1 whole page of codding just for a little tune to play.

I saw Aaron's talk at California Extreme on Youtube and I look exactly like the guy.

I think it's a suspicious coincidence that I come back to Mame after about 4 years without using it and immediately Aaron steps down.

That tears it.

Still better see you and the orange shirt at CA Extreme this year, right? I already told work I'm calling in sick that Friday, Saturday, Monday.

Six years already? Then that means I've been doing artwork for almost five. Time does fly.

I look forward to continue seeing your name in the whatsnew, to see what you'll be breaking improving next. =D

Well.

Best of luck to you, Aaron. Your seemingly endless outpouring of contributions in even the most minor of "u" releases made it pretty clear this has been a labor of love for you, and we're indebted to your dedication. Thank you for everything, and we look forward to future updates even if they aren't from the helm...

...and a warm welcome to Kale, the new Rhinocerous Bar Commander who made even the mightiest tremble in fear. Really glad you stepped up!

Aaron, thanks for doing such a great job over all these years. You've done an incredible amount of work keeping MAME up-to-date, and have handled the most challenging situations with tact and patience. It's rare to see that kind of professionalism in a hobby project, IMO.

And I'd say we are definitely being left in good hands with Angelo at the helm!

Yup. If you were paying attention, you'd know MAME's schedule went weird last year because of the recently announced Windows 8 ARM port

As for the step-down, Aaron told the devs why, but he hasn't said in public so I'm not going to either. Suffice it to say it's something extremely awesome for him personally, and not due to anything bad about MAME.

Was there anything in MAME that Aaron couldn't work on due to being a conflict of interest with his job at MS?

The only case I know of where there was a conflict between a day job and MAME/MESS work was the guy doing Nintendo 64 stuff who was a dev for a Nintendo platform as a day job.

This sucks! I hate change. I still have underwear I've been using since junior high. I kept a car once for 10 years after it stopped running. I go on drinking binges when I have to change homes.

Aaron Giles' name has been showing up on my screen all over the place for years, and now he's gone.

Thanks for all you've done, dude. It's certainly made a difference in MY life.

There is this:

*The* reason I upgarded to Windows 95.

DASArcade wasn't far along enough for me to wait at the time. Just for nostalgia, I also try Sparcade under DOSBox once in a blue moon.

The only real Microsoft/Arcade overlap right now would be the Microsoft-branded (but not currently developed internally) Game Room.

Honestly, with Krome having dropped the ball so badly, I think it'd require someone of Aaron's caliber to get it even REMOTELY back on track at this point-- and Microsoft would have to have decided to bring it internal, which seems very unlikely.

Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure this isn't the reason, and I hope that whatever reason it may be, that he's planning on continuing work on MAME as his personal time allows.

It might be time to split the UI entirely from the core and have it as just a frontend for whatever MAME.EXE revision you have handy.

he clearly stated in the announcement that he will keep working on the core and that he's mainly passing to Kale all the work needed to put together the releases...

no ms conspiracy here around

I been following MAME almost since day one and you have been my favorite project leader of all time.

When you inherited the project mame had a some key things missing both on the interface, in terms of user options and internally and now they are almost all fixed, with most of them having been fixed by you personally.

Your rebuilds of mame's various functions have also been very impressive. I know that people complain about them, but as a programmer, all I know is pre-AG I couldn't follow MAME's source because it was too convoluted, and post-AG I *almost* understand what is going on.

Good luck in your future projects and please keep it up with the core rebuild!

Uh.. never claimed anything even resembling a MS conspiracy, just my hopes that he's staying long-term, since he's been one of the rocks of stability for the entire team since pretty much the beginning.

(And for the record, this response has got to be one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to type. I've got my mouse on a completely different PC while I do a OS install on it, and so I'm browsing using the tab key. Beating my brains out with a brick would be less painful.)

Thank you Aaron, for the many years of dedication and excellent hard-work. You've suffered through a lot over the years, with an endless stream of people who whinge, demand, beg, rant, and abuse. It sure has seemed a thankless task at times.

You are a MAMEDev, a title only a small number of the best and most dedicated programmers on the planet will ever achieve. Through the efforts of you and the other MAMEDev, many games have now been preserved and that would otherwise have been lost to oblivion. A nice side effect is that the vast majority are playable in MAME on very modest hardware. You have brought a lot of people happiness in seeing their old favorites again, and also discovering new gems they have never seen before.

You have achieved a lot, pushed massive and exciting improvements into the MAME project, and you have done a lot of good.

I wish you all the very best for the future, and I hope your biggest dreams and aspirations come true.

Angelo has very big shoes to fill. Good luck to you Angelo, and thank you again Aaron.

Aaron,

It's been a pleasure pouring through the pages of changes and improvements in every release over the years.

As for why you have chosen to pass the baton?

1. Intel Sandy Bridge finally makes System 16 hardware playable without massive overclocking.
Time to stop coding and start playing.

2. After much review it was decided that this was the only way to incorporate the rest of the laserdisc games into Mame.

3. Your blog page threatened to shut down after a 2yr hiatus

I thank Aaron Guiles for jpegview. It was like the best! In all seriousness, good work. Making this thing so portable is appreciated.

JPEGView runs in MESS now, so that circle is complete

I see it has been almost 17 years since he updated it. That's pathetic.

This does bring to mind a decent thank-you for Aaron... send him thank-you postcards?!

Aaron didn't have to deal with psychotic stalkers until Virtual Gamestation was released.

Does this mean you aren't singing on the occasion? Neighborhood BBQ gets the full nine yards and Aaron is chopped liver? Mic + web cam or temp ban.
