BIOS Editing for Dummies - removing the small Intel logo branding
#251965 - 04/17/11 01:39 AM

I've got an ASUS P5KPL-CM motherboard in the PC in my MAME cabinet.

There three things I'm trying to do with the BIOS...

1) Replace the OEM splash screen image with a solid black image - COMPLETE

2) Remove the "Press TAB to display BIOS POST Message" text - COMPLETE

3) Remove the "INTEL" branding logo overlaying the splash screen - FAIL

The first two were pretty easy, but I can't figure out where the INTEL logo is hidden using MMTool.

Any ideas? I've googled the hell out of this and I'm officially stuck.

UPDATE: I've managed to get it working. Here's the full step-by-step on how I did it...

1) Extract module 21 "Multi Language" from BIOS ROM using MMTool in uncompressed form.

2) Edit the extracted module data with hex editor, replacing the "Press TAB..." text with spaces (20 hex).

3) Replace module 21 "Multi Language" in BIOS with edited module using MMTool.

4) Extract module 0E "OEM Logo" in uncompressed form using MMTool.

5) Edit the image data in the module with a hex editor, replacing everything with 00 hex. This points to palette index 0, which is black in my example. Alternatively, I believe that you can add a .BMP extension and edit the image in your favorite paint program to make it all black.

6) Replace the module 0E "OEM Logo" with your edited module (BMP) using the ASUS MyLogo utility.

7) Delete the Intel Branding Logo, which in my BIOS is stored in module F0 "User Defined or Reserved", using MMTool.

Can you show me a good site for changing a splash logo on my Intel P4 board?

If it's an Intel-made board, I think you need to use the "Intel Integrator Toolkit" to change the splash screen...

I managed to figure out where in the BIOS they hide the Intel logo however it's in a funky format that appears to contain two bitmaps. I'm thinking that one might be an alpha mask or something. The other odd thing is that the BMP headers don't appear to be correct.

I've attached the binary if anyone wants to look at it.

The icons aren't standard BMP, they're a special type. There's a program out there for editing them, can't recall what it's name was.

If I take the binary blob that I extracted from the BIOS (attached in an earlier post) and add a BMP extension, I'm able to open it in my paint program (Paint Shop Pro 8 ). However, if I re-save it with a new name without making any changes and do a diff between the two files, they are very different. So, however it's stored, PSP8 is smart enough to decode it.

If your board has onboard video..... new [Re: krick]

I know, onboard sucks, right? But it's a good idea for back-up. Anyways, if you have onboard video, in the bios you can set the display adapter to your card; in Win, set your card as the main display adapter (this may or may not be necessary); then nothing will be displayed via the card till Windows boots.

I know, lots of people want some kind of image as soon as possible. But this way is far less hassle for the sacrifice of so little bling.

Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
