Need a new power supply and possibly jamma harness? Not sure what I have or what to get...
#258444 - 06/27/11 03:04 AM

So long story short I need a new power supply, my cabinet is dead. There is no power to the monitor at all.

Here is what was in there:

Is that a standard switching power supply? Should I just replace that "HiTRON" part or the whole board it's attached to also? Can anyone point me to a replacement?

I would basically like all new wiring from a reliable power supply company.

The power supply unit usually only supplies DC power to the arcade board.

The monitor uses AC power. Maybe your monitor or isolation transformer has died.

Here's a diagram of how cabinets are normally wired...

Tell us a little more about your cabinet setup.

Are you running a JAMMA arcade board, or are you running a MAME PC?

Hey Krick, thanks for the info!

This is primarily a MAME cab. I have left as much of the cabinet intact as possible. I am using an arcade VGA with a smart strip. So I flip the cabinet switch on and the PC and monitor power up. As-of now, the Monitor isn't powering up. I would not be surprised if the monitor was dead. I just don't know how to verify that.

Here is the kicker, the last time I used this machine with a jamma board, it made a loud cracking sound and blew up IC's on the boards. I've lost two boards this way after double checking and everything seeming to be ok. Something must have changed when I replaced the monitor chassis, jammas did work at one point.

After hearing that, someone said it war the power supply for sure, so I do want to replace it regardless.

Any ideas?

Ughh. My Monitor is a zenith "EIA 1101" from 1990. Been reading nothing but bad things about them. they seem to be the worst of the worst..

wait...

Hm the chassis model number is WG25K7191..... So use a wells chassis for this...?

First of all, running a cabinet power supply with no load is a BAD idea. Without a JAMMA board plugged in, that's essentially what you were doing. I wouldn't be surprised if you damaged your power supply. Ultimarc recommends that you disconnect the DC power supply when using a JPAC and ArcadeVGA. Before you connected your JAMMA boards, did you check the power supply voltages with a meter to be sure that they were close to the proper voltages?

Second, looking at your pictures, I'd be leaning toward a failed isolation transformer. It looks pretty rough.

Third, I'm not an expert on any of this stuff so I recommend you post over on the BYOAC forum for some more qualified help...

I wouldn't assume anything has died until you go through the proper troubleshooting procedures to isolate the real problems.

The monitor's a Wells-Gardiner with a Zenith CRT (EIA #1101 was Zenith's number). Zenith CRTs of the early 90s tend to be pretty crappy but not in a way that would be related to the problems you're having (more of a short lifespan and poor picture quality).
